Lorenzo Jackson Adams during his years in Norwalk Connecticut
Thursday, March 6, 2014
Colonel Israel Putnam's Connecticut Third Regiment
"Regiment raised on the first call for troops by the legislature at special session of April-May 1775. It was recruited in Windham County, with one company from New London County, as noted from the residences of the officers. Marching in companies to the camps forming around Boston, it was stationed during the siege in Putnam's Center Division in Cambridge until expiration of terms of service, Dec 10 1776. In July it was adopted as Continental. A detachment of the officers and men was engaged at Bunker Hill, as stated in the note on the battle appended to the last company; a few men joined the Quebec expedition. In reenlisting troops for service in 1776, this regiment was re-organized with Benedict Arnold, then before Quebec, as Colonel."
The above is a description of Colonel Putnam's regiment. The note about Bunker Hill mentioned is long and detailed and interesting and is available here: Bunker Hill engagement of Connecticut Third Regiment troops.
This is probably available at this link only for subscribers to ancestry.com. It is likely to be found with a Google search.

Adamses in Canterbury CT - A locus of many Adams families in the 18th century
This link currently takes us to a lovely compendium of Adamses in Canterbury CT, including maiden names of wives, years they joined the church it is compiled from, and when they died.
Canterbury CT church membership records by year
I am storing it here for future reference. I will add it to my Adams database as time and relevance allow.

Charles Adams of Norwalk
There were several Charleses in the Norwalk directory beginning in the first issue in 1882. I believe this timeline shows that one of them is Augustus's son, brother of Robert, William, and Lorenzo. Here is the timeline including directory issue, name, occupation, and address:
1882-84 - Charles Adams, molder, h 67 Water st N
1885 - not available or not published
1886-87 - Charles Adams, moulder, h 67 Water st N
1887-88 - Charles E Adams, moulder, h 67 Water st N
1889-90 - Charles Adams, moulder R&M Co.
1891 - Charles Adams, policeman, h 67 Harbor st N
1891-92 - Charles Adams, policeman, h 67 Harbor av N
1893-94 - Charles Adams, bds 67 Harbor av N
1894-95 - Charles C Adams, bds 67 Harbor N
1895-96 - Charles C Adams, molder, bds 67 Harbor av N
1896-97 - Charles C Adams, molder, bds 67 Harbor av N
1897-98 - Charles C Adams, molder, h 57 Chapel
1898-99 - Charles C Adams, molder, h 65 Harbor av N
1902 - Charles C Adams, molder, h 3 Harbor av N w/ Christopher J Adams, boarder
1903 - Charles C Adams, molder, h 5 Harbor av N w/ CJA, boarder
1904 - Charles C Adams, molder, h 5 Harbor av N [no CJA listed]
1905 - Charles E Adams, molder, h 5 Harbor av N w/ CJA, boarder
1906 - Charles E Adams, molder, h 5 Harbor av N [CJA removes to NJ]
1907 - Charles E Adams, molder, h 5 Harbor av N
1908-1913 Anna Adams wid Charles E h 5 Harbor av N [in yearly directories]
1914-1915 Hannah Adams wid Charles E h 5 Harbor av N [in yearly directories]
This is the end of the listings that include Charles Adams, middle initial E or C, in the Norwalk directories.
Importance: it ties Charles (despite the change of middle initial) to Christopher J Adams. No doubt Charles C and Charles E are the same person: same job, same house.
Charles's employment as a policeman anticipates by more than 10 years his brother Lorenzo doing the same thing.
Charles Adams, second son of Augustus, was born around 1860. He would have been 23 at the time of the first directory entry and 47 when he died. Census records should clarify whether this Charles is the son of Augustus because it will give an age for Charles.
The blank lines will be filled in as soon as I can finish the films.

Data: Adams and Tanner, Norwalk Directories 1882-1935
I extracted these records today from Norwalk directories that had been stored on microfilm. My intent was to follow the comings and goings of the Tanners and Adamses as they moved around Fairfield county.
Norwalk directories were available beginning in 1882, which was somewhat before the arrival of these two families. So I was able to watch them come, live, and in most cases move away or die. I was also able to see that they lived very near each other for the most part.
I hope you enjoy this peek into a portion of the lives of our loved ones, and also that you can make use of the data in your own research.
(So far I am up to 1922. I have 5 more films to read. I will add the rest of the information here as I collect it. When it is complete, this little parenthetical comment will disappear!)
It is impossible to make a list of this width look good, so I have tried to make it more orderly by making the dates in bold. The order of entry will be: Year, Name, Occupation, Address, whether N(orwalk) or S(outh Norwalk), other:

Notes:
1) I don't know of any relation between Arthur and the other Adamses listed here, which are members of our family. But he lives with them more than once, so I have included him here, just in case we discover a relationship.
2) Carrie M Adams is a daughter of Robert F Adams, as is Elizabeth Adams.
3) Augustus Adams is the father of William A, Charles E, Robert F, and Lorenzo J Adams.
4) Christopher J Adams and Augustus J Adams were the sons of Lorenzo by his first wife, while Lorenzo jr was the son of Lorenzo by his second wife.
5) Howard Hunt was married to Ella Adams, a dau of Lorenzo.
6) John Gilbert married Isabelle Tanner, niece and possibly adopted daughter of Mary J Tanner.
7) After the death of her husband Christopher J Adams, Ida (nee Tanner - daughter of Charles and Mary J.) went to work, according to the directory, at "H Jacob & Sons". This company, which began to manufacture shoes in 1914 in Norwalk, is cited in a book, Shoe and Leather Reporter vol. 113, p 21 (via Google).
