The Teacher of English

John Averell was one of Christopher A Adams's students; he wrote this piece in 2003 for a periodical he edits:

It has a picture of this man who was also my English teacher at Darien High School for two years, and my father.

In this photo he is about 43. One of our sons, who is not very much younger than that, is beginning to resemble him, I think.

It's an enjoyable and affectionate, and remarkably accurate little piece, and it brings back memories not only of my father, but of my days at DHS. I hope you enjoy it.

Stamford House, Robert Adams proprietor

The Stamford House was the place of choice in which to spend the night, according to this article:

This piece by the Stamford Historical Society, Inc, also includes a wonderful photo of the Stamford House, and a description of its history.

I was astounded to see familiar names in the article! It so happens that at one point the Stamford House was owned and operated by Robert Adams and his partner J. Hawley Ingalls. Here's an excerpt:

"The register of the old Stamford House for the years 1865-1869, along with a photograph of the old hotel, was donated to the Stamford Historical Society in November 1990 by Carolyn Berges Morrison and Ruth Berges Schiaroli (the daughters of Elizabeth Adams Berges), the granddaughters of Robert Francis Adams, who in the early 1900's (1906-1915) owned and operated the Stamford House, the town's stagecoach inn. In 1915 Mr. Adams and his partner, J. Hawley Ingalls, built the first modern hotel in Stamford which was known as the Davenport Hotel and in later years renamed the Stamford House, after the original."

Robert Francis Adams was the fourth son of Augustus Adams and Alice Donnelly. It's nice to see he did well for himself.

The Davenport Hotel has an interesting name. The Davenports were a prominent family in Stamford, and related to the Stottlers through the marriage of Victor E Stottler with Helen Warren, whose mother's side included a Davenport. I don't know if Adams and Ingalls named their hotel after that family, but it is possible. Robert was Victor's first cousin, but probably more importantly, the name was well known in the Stamford area. Does anyone know whether there's a direct connection between the Davenport family and the name of Robert's hotel?

I have done some research on the Berges family, and Sandra Schiaroli Jameson, Robert's granddaughter, has contributed greatly through a descendancy chart sent to me by Mary Brett. There is much more to Robert's story to share in the future. Does anyone have a photo?

Estelle Shutes Stottler

Isn't she beautiful? This is Estelle Shutes, who married Malcolm Stottler, son on Victor E Stottler and Helen Warren Stottler. Victor was son of Mary Jane Adams Stottler.

It is through Malcolm and Estelle that we know about our wonderful modern-day descendants of this side of the family, a story I will share shortly.

I hope one or more of Estelle's granddaughters or grandsons will write and tell us about her. I'd like to know more than the few stories I've heard.

Sandy? Jen? Anyone?

Photo: Mary Jane Adams Stottler

Posted by PicasaSo here is our beloved Mary Jane. I wanted to post this right above the photo of her son because I see such a resemblance. This was probably taken in Stamford, I don't know when.

Kuhner family photos, incl Stottler and Adams

Scott Kuhner contributed these photos, I think with the help of his mother Betty. He is a 4th cousin of mine down through the Stottler line: Mary Jane Adams Stottler, Lorenzo DARBY Stottler, Lorenzo Stottler Jr, Elizabeth Stottler Kuhner, Scott... (I'll get this posted on the Adams Family Tree someday!!!).

He has a wonderful collection of photos of members of his immediate family, also John Stottler and Mary Jane Adams, sister of Augustus and daughter of Alfred and Hannh Scott.

I haven't found out yet if Scott is named after Hannah Scott and her line.

I will add the photos to the family tree in ancestry, but also I will start posting them here, with brief comments.
