ReplyDeleteCanterbury, founded by Major James Filch,separated from Plainficld and was incorporated in1703. In 1708 the Town of Canterbury set aside apiece of land for a cemetery which at that lime wascalled the Old Church Burying Ground, now theCleveland Cemetery which is located on Rte. 169north of the intersection of Rtcs. 169 & 14. Laterother plots of land were set aside for morecemeteries. We currently have 24 cemeteries. Carey (Cary) Cemetery was part of theCaptain Samuel Adams (1709/10 -1760) estate andprobably became a cemetery in 1750 since the firstearliest stone thai has been recorded is the 1752 ofCaptain Gideon Cobb. Samuel's grandfather,Samuel (1652/3 -1727). who was a millwright wasone of the first scalers in Canterbury. In 1703 thisSamuel was given the first privilege to operated aCorn Mill on Rowland's Brook, just north of theCarey cemetery on the west side of Rie. 169. Hisgrandson. Samuel, continued the operation ofrunning this Mill and later his son Nathan inheritedil. For almost 140 years (his land remained in theAdams Family. In 1837 James Carey bought thisland from Rufus Adams. Nathan's son and theburying ground that was then known as the Nathan Adams Cemetery
